How can schools run Open Events in a pandemic?
Sutton’s Year 8 students take the leading roles with the school’s ‘virtual’ open event.
With the deadline for parents to apply for their children’s secondary school looming (October 31st), and with parents unable to attend a school open events, Overton Grange School on Stanley Road has opted for an open event film this September.
The school worked with EMPRA and London’s MetFilm School graduates to create the video.
Ruth, our MD said: “In normal times, before deciding which schools to apply for, families would have visited the schools they were particularly interested in.
“This year, with Covid-19 restrictions, that’s not possible – the school’s website will be the place where most parents go for more information.
Many schools like Overton Grange School have created a special area on their website and videos to help families get a ‘feel’ for the school.”
Overton Grange’s first ever ‘open event’ video features Year 8 students who lead viewers through a typical day at the school, presenting the school’s facilities from canteen to creative spaces, from sports field to science labs.
Filming at the school came with its own challenges because of Coronavirus restrictions, only a small number of students could be filmed within their class bubble, no changing into PE kit and no large crowds of children socialising.
Ruth added: “These are fabulous learning experiences for students – they get to work with the crew, learn how shots are set-up and how we put a film together."
She said: "This is a really important time for families, and they need to take time to make the right decision for their child.”
Education Marketing & PR in a Lockdown
With so many SMEs suffering acute financial hardship during the pandemic, EMPRA has been working hard to be able to help its clients.
Here’s a short case study about one of its clients, leading lesson plan and education resources experts PlanBee
EMPRA helped them make the best of a truly terrible national crisis by maximising (and creating) opportunities for them as the entire school system went into lockdown.
